Click for Panama, Panama Forecast

Well, now that it is all over, I've gone ahead and made The Panama Syndrome an archive of sorts. The following is all my posts, with the first one at the top. Feel free to browse and reminisce with me.

Chiggers cause intense itching and are so small that you can't see them with the naked eye. You may not even be aware of their presence until you begin to itch or notice the raised, red spots that signal their presence in your skin. [more]

At last, I are here! The descent into Panama City is both beautiful and intense. We come in from the northern, Atlantic side of Panama, instantly confronted by lush mountains. Quickly we descend into the clouds, not sure where exactly the mountains below may be. [more]

Today, the real Panama began in earnest. Enough of the luxuries of Gamboa Resort! Done with the A/C and the bar and the television and the odd tourists from far flung countries! Through with comfort and complacency! [more]

his morning I had the intention of waking up around 6am. Instead, at approximately 4am, came the most bone-chilling, fear-inducing, sleep-rattling sound: the roar of a horny howler money. [more]

Wed Jan 21, 2004
Last night the howlers were much quieter, or at least further away. The best way I’ve come up with to think of their sound is it’s probably what the Dementors in Harry Potter sound like. [more]

I meet Estrella the ocelot [more]

A survey of my environs using photographic technology [more]

So without further ado, I duct-taped my socks, DEET’d my feet, grabbed a good digicam, unpacked and set up the Canon XL1 video camera, and dashed off with a couple other “pro” camera guys to find the ocelot. [more]

The red spider monkeys of doom and destruction [more]

Some fun stuff did happen today. A girl got hit with monkey poop. [more]

Ocelot Photo Number Two [more]

I might institute something called the “Hijinx and Hilarity Index” or HHI for short. Working with a video crew and various other strong personalities has led to the beginning of some wackiness around here. We will keep a scale, 1 being slothlike boredom and 10 being Three Stooges-style “Woop Woop Woop” slapstick. [more]

Agouti. Behold. [more]

The photo of the sloth that makes you go "Awwwww" [more]

A photo of me [more]

As the day wound down, it suddenly dawned on me that everyone was talking about leaving the island for the night because we earned a day off for Sunday. It also became obvious that I was not included in this plan. [more]

Here is a quick little 3-shot of the immediate area, composed of 3 still photos. [more]

There are two schools of thought on vacation: you can hike and walk and climb, or you can bask and relax. Seeing as how I spent much of yesterday crittering around the area, I decided to kick back today and do nothing except sit in the sun and read. [more]

Mon Jan 26, 2004
The whole crew came back with a vengeance and disrupted the nice calm resulting from my abandonment. The hubbub of activity wasn’t that bad actually. The broadcasts began and looked amazingly good. [more]

Tue Jan 27, 2004
On the way home last night I decided to chase a frog because it’s really funny to watch them gullump their way along. Unfortunately I ran into a spider web. It stuck to me all over and made me do the hoochiecoochie dance, fearing I had Death Incarnate on my back. [more]

On days when there is nothing fantabulistic to say, I will just share a photo from the day. [more]

Thu Jan 29, 2004
Apparently I'm hearing comments that there are no pictures of leafcutters in this here journal right here. I am truly sorry for this. [more]

After my brief image/post last night, I finally succumbed to the pressures of Dr. Tucker to join him in the lounge for a few beers. He is a jolly sort. The intellectual, slightly dry, but always good for an interesting discussion type of scientist. [more]

Fri Jan 30, 2004
It is readily apparent that I'm starting to loose it. I'm not sleep deprived, not under-fed, not really drinking, and I'm staying out of the sun for long periods of time. It's just a cabin fever mentality I think; the effects of staying on one tiny patch of one tiny island for so long. [more]

Sat Jan 31, 2004
Well, I'm off to Gamboa Resort for the evening. I will not be going to the locks tomorrow but instead to the Embera native indian villiage. Why? Well, it's very complex and more specifics may come at a later date. [more]

Sun Feb 01, 2004
Well, greatings from the network connection at Gamboa Resort. I am currently getting ready to head off on my tour of the native Embera Village. Wil and crazy party last night. The HHI hit 10 probably 4 or 5 times. [more]

Mon Feb 02, 2004
Turns out I have an intern in Boston who was just keeping the fires burning at the office. I called him at 3:30pm on Saturday and told him to come to Panama within 24 hours. Man, that was by far the coolest call I have ever made on the phone, I'm sure it was the coolest he ever received. [more]

Tue Feb 03, 2004
Check out the naked ladies! [more]

Nothing new to report today. Some hijinx. Some work. Somewhat in a dark mood so not the best time for blog posting. Tomorrow portends radio-tracking dipteryx seeds and interviewing researchers. [more]

Wed Feb 04, 2004
Today I got really underway with the new aspects of my job. I went to the radio-tracking lab and learned all about their proposal to radio-track dipteryx seeds. They already track agoutis and ocelots out here with some cool triangulating radio towers that let them see where things are in real time. [more]

Thu Feb 05, 2004
Today I packed my suitcase and got the whole personal side of my stay here in order and ready for departure. There is still much packing to do for work, but the fact that packing is now the number one issue leaves no doubt that BCI is about to slip from experience to memory. [more]

A parting shot [more]
